COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Southern California guard DeAnthony Melton played like a silky-smooth veteran down the stretch at Texas A&M, prompting a gentle reminder from Trojans coach Andy Enfield afterward.Hes a true freshman, in the third game of his college career, and we were on the road, Enfield said with a smile.Melton could have fooled the Aggies, late in the Trojans 65-63 comeback victory before a stunned crowd on Friday night. The 6-foot-4 Melton knocked down a 3-pointer with 2:07 remaining to close A&Ms lead to 62-60, and with 12 seconds left he stole the ball from A&M point guard JC Hampton to help preserve the victory. He has an uncanny ability to make plays at crucial times, Enfield said.Melton scored four of his eight points in the last two minutes, Chimezie Metu had 14 points and Jordan McLaughlin added 13.The Aggies (2-1) led 63-60 with 58 seconds remaining when the Trojans (3-0) closed with a flourish. Bennie Boatwright made two free throws with 45 seconds remaining to tighten the gap to 63-62. Hampton then drove the lane and missed a short jump shot, and Boatwright missed a 3-point attempt on the ensuing possession. But McLaughlin grabbed the offensive rebound, and Metu followed with a dunk to lift the Trojans to a 64-63 lead they wouldnt relinquish. We made youthful mistakes that Ive got to get them better at, said A&M coach Billy Kennedy, who had to replace four senior starters from last years NCAA tournament Sweet 16 team.Following Metus dunk Hampton dribbled the ball up court with 17 seconds left, but Melton swiped the ball from behind, and Admon Gilder fouled Melton when he drove to the basket with 11 seconds left. Melton made his first free throw but missed his second, and A&M guard D.J. Hoggs 3-point attempt from the top of the key missed the mark at the buzzer. We made some mistakes, and in life when you make mistakes sometimes you pay, A&M forward Tonny Trocha-Morelos said. We made mistakes, and USC took advantage.Hogg led the Aggies with 17 points, and Trocha-Morelos added 15. USCs Elijah Stewart had 11 points and 11 rebounds and Metu grabbed 10 boards.Texas A&Ms front line is just outstanding, Enfield said of the Aggies size and athleticism down low. So to hold them to 38 percent shooting and out-rebound them (47 to 44) was terrific on our part.BIG PICTUREAfter two easy wins at home to start the season, the Trojans showed plenty of resiliency in their first time on the road, overcoming a late deficit in front of a hostile crowd. A&M coach Billy Kennedy said he believes USC is an NCAA Tournament team, and the Trojans looked like it on Friday. The Aggies are young and it showed. Freshman forward Robert Williams has been a dynamo around the basket, but a couple of errant long shots late in the game showed he still has a lot to learn. That goes for plenty of his underclassmen teammates, as well.UP NEXTTexas A&M goes on the road for the first time on Thursday, and will face Cal State Northridge in Fullerton, California, in the Wooden Legacy. The Trojans return to Los Angeles on Tuesday against New Orleans, the first of three consecutive home games.HE SAID ITSometimes you have to lose, and learn in those games, A&M coach Billy Kennedy said of his young team.STAT OF THE NIGHTThe teams were almost even in turnovers (11 for USC and 12 for A&M), but the Trojans doubled up the Aggies, 16-8, in points off turnovers.TURNING POINTA&M led for nearly the entire first half, but USCs Jordan McLaughlin sank a jumper from near the top of the key at the halftime buzzer to lift the Trojans to a 31-29 lead, a harbinger of things to come from USC.STREAK STOPPERSUSC snapped an A&M streak of a dozen consecutive non-conference wins over high-major opponents in Reed Arena. A&M hadnt lost to a high-major in non-league play at home since December 8, 2001, against Miami. DeForest Buckner Super Bowl Jersey . By having more great seasons. LAS VEGAS -- With his NBA career at a crossroads, Allen Crabbe was committed to getting better. That commitment was pushed to the limit one night during the summer between Crabbes second and third seasons in the league, when his best friend, trainer and roommate, Casey Trujeque, wanted him to get up at the crack of dawn to attend a grueling Bikram Yoga class.Crabbe thought he was going to have the following day off, but Trujeque changed his mind, leading to an argument at the dinner table.Who in their right mind would wake up at 5 a.m. to go to Bikram Yoga? Trujeque loosely recalls Crabbe saying.A kid trying to make $80 million would, Trujeque replied angrily before leaving the table and going to his room.Trujeque did not set his alarm clock, figuring Crabbe would be sleeping in. But come 5 a.m., Trujeque received a knock on his door.Allen said, Casey, lets go, Trujeque recalled. And right then and there I was like Allens going to be successful. He really wants this.Crabbe laughed upon having the story relayed to him.I got up and did it because when you do things you dont want to do, youre going to reap those benefits in the end, Crabbe said. Thats the only way you can get better: getting comfortable by doing things that are uncomfortable. After falling into the second round of the 2013 draft and barely playing in his first two seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers, Crabbe worked out five times a week with Trujeque during the summer of 2015 -- and he used that rigorous workout regimen as a springboard to post a career year in which he averaged 10.3 points and shot 39.4 percent from 3-point range in 81 games. The 24-year-old restricted free-agents reward: a staggering four-year, $75 million offer sheet from the Brooklyn Nets, which the Blazers matched on Sunday to keep him in Portland. Not bad for a guy who had made all of $2.6 million in his first three seasons combined. Its a reward for working hard, staying patient and trusting the process, said Crabbe, who switched agents before the free-agency process began and also received interest from the Philadelphia 76ers and Sacramento Kings.I couldve given up, but I did everything that the organization asked of me and just waited my turn. Once we had all those roster changes, I knew there was going to be an opportunity, and I just made sure I didnt miss out on it.For Crabbe, the new deal was worth a career of ups-and-downs.Crabbe and Trujeque met on the AAU travel circuit in Los Angeles when they were in eighth grade, and the duo ended up becoming teammates at Price High School. From there, their paths diverged -- with Crabbe ggoing on to star at California and Trujeque getting injured at Montana State and quitting basketball to focus on training athletes -- but they always remained in close contact.ddddddddddddAfter Crabbe fell to No. 31 in the draft -- largely due to a right foot injury he suffered during a pre-draft workout with the New York Knicks -- and his rights were acquired by the Blazers, Crabbe asked Trujeque to move to Portland with him on the advice of his former agent.?Early on, it was a struggle. Crabbe played just 15 games as a rookie, sitting on the bench in a suit rather than a jersey most nights, and all the DNP-CDs made him question whether he could ever make it.He played more his second year, but barely. If he was going to remain in the NBA, Year 3 would be crucial. Crabbe committed to working out with Trujeque in Portland rather than going back to L.A. like usual. The duo did three workouts per day: ball-handling, a weight-lifting and game-situations sessions. And yes, occasionally there was the Bikram Yoga sessions too.Crabbe constantly practiced coming off pin-downs and working out of pick-and-rolls. He became more consistent with his one- and two-dribble pull-up jumpers. He played well in Summer League and with Nicolas Batum, Wesley Matthews and Arron Afflalo all leaving, plenty of minutes opened up in the Blazers rotation.Playing behind starters Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum, Crabbe was able to have a significant impact off the bench. He hit 53.5 percent of his shots from 10-16 feet and 44.9 percent of his shots from 16 feet-3-point arc, according to basketball-reference.com.Crabbe was going to be the starter in Brooklyn, something he was looking forward to. But in Portland, hell likely continue in a reserve role while playing in a system hes extremely comfortable in. He just wants to prove hes worth every penny the Blazers gave him.Its definitely not the time to chill, take a break or relax because I got the contract I wanted, Crabbe said. For me as a basketball player, its important to live up to those expectations and prove that this contract wasnt a fluke or that they wasted all this money theyve invested in me.His mentality -- the same one that enabled him to wake up for that Bikram Yoga class at 5 a.m. -- should certainly help.I always feel like Ive been the underdog and had to prove myself year after year, Crabbe said.Things werent handed to me at all. And I really had to work behind the scenes in order to get to where Im at now. ' ' '
